How to Fish achievement routes: the details that save a run

The official list tells you what to unlock. This field guide tells you where players lose time: a missed trophy hand-in, the wrong lure assumption, a patched Bean exploit or one expensive roulette bet.

Version note: route notes are cross-checked against the Steam community achievement guide and the 1.0.5+ patch history. Prices and exploits can change; keep the evidence link open while you play.

ROUTE ORDER

Finish the story first.

After the ending, you return to Island 1 with your gear and access to all five islands. That is the safest place to clean up style, collection and challenge achievements.

  • Keep a separate Bean save.
  • Use Tab to see missing creatures.
  • Leave the final boss for a prepared run.

Before you chase achievements

  1. Keep one normal save and one dedicated Bean save. Do not mix the timer route with a completionist run.
  2. Play the story to the ending before farming fiddly achievements. You retain endgame gear and can return to all five islands.
  3. Press Tab regularly. The encyclopedia tracks missing creatures and drip variants, even though it does not reveal their lure.

Island 1: the trophy is the quest item

For Who stole my beer, bait the rod with beer, defeat the Spider Crab and bring the shell to the lighthouse keeper. The community route warns that every boss drops a distinct trophy, not plain meat. If an NPC will not advance, inspect what you are carrying.

Island 2: Dinnertime has a hidden fourth step

Collect three Leeches from the forest floor, give them to the lady and use the reward bait to summon the Giant Piranha. The achievement does not pop when the boss dies: pick up its tail and return the tail to the same NPC. Keep the shotgun for the boss, use fists or a knife on the small piranhas, and eat fish instead of using explosives near your feet.

Island 3: cooking is a live value meter

Bring the shark to the Grillmaster to unlock the grill. Press F while holding an item over the flame: the inspection panel updates Value, Cooking multiplier, Weight and Killscore. Pull at 1.5x; the multiplier falls to zero when the item turns solid black. The same cooking multiplier can apply to weapons and other sellable objects. Regular and mini-boss lures may break, while island boss lures are consumed on use.

For Vacation, use an endangered fish such as a reported Needlefish, Bowl Fish or Seahorse. Endangered and drip are separate flags, so a fish can be both. The tourist gives the carrot used for the Pufferfish encounter.

Island 4: fight the bird from inside cover

Use the Professional Boss Lure to fish the Tuna, drop the Tuna as bait and start the seagull fight. The bird has a dive and a ranged shot; both can be answered by sheltering inside a building. The casino gives the clearest sightline. Community players report that enemy red dots remain visible through walls and terrain, so track the bird under cover and step out only for a shot.

Island 5: finish the story, then clean up

Give the scientist five fish, receive the whale bait, kill the Bowhead Whale and throw it into the volcano. The Lava Whale is the actual final boss for Deadliest catch. Bring a fully attached assault rifle and as many lava-cooked fish as possible. After the kill, take the tail back to the scientist for RHIB keys and the ending.

Collector and Fishipedia: hunt by lure, not island

The strongest correction in the current community guide is that location does not determine the creature: the lure does. You can complete the encyclopedia from Island 5 by cycling lure types. Check Tab, identify the missing row, then budget the appropriate lure. Drip variants respawn, so a missed skin is a grind, not a permanently lost chance.

Handyman: only the killing blow must be bare hands

Lower the Lava Whale with the assault rifle, switch to fists or the accepted unarmed option for the final hit, and let the rest of the co-op lobby keep the boss occupied. Community reports say the achievement can award to the whole lobby when one player lands the killing blow, but verify your current patch before relying on co-op credit.

All in + Rich! Millionaire: the useful math

On Island 5, green roulette pays 35x the value of the bet. To sell an item worth 100,000, a community calculation puts the minimum bet near 2,858. With lava cooking at 1.5x, target a raw catch around 1,906 or better; aiming for 3,200 after cooking leaves room for an imperfect value roll. Only gamble fish above the threshold and sell the rest to fund more lures. Green is roughly one pocket in 37, so this is a budgeted loop, not a guaranteed quick win.

Bean: do not follow the old skip

The popular early guide explicitly marks its Island 5 shortcut as patched in 1.0.5. Treat any route that depends on travelling to a locked island as outdated. Make a fresh save, run solo for lower coordination overhead, and use the current Steam patch notes as the authority before attempting the one-hour timer. We keep the old route visible only as historical context, not as a promise that it still works.
