How to Fish controls: inspect first, then improvise

The game uses physics more than a traditional fishing mini-game. The most useful “control” is often knowing what an item is before you throw it, cook it or hand it to an NPC.

Evidence rule: only interactions repeatedly documented by community guides are listed as confirmed. Check the in-game Controls menu after every patch.
WASD

Move

Walk the island, reposition around bosses and keep an escape line open.

SHIFT

Sprint

Reach a merchant, dodge a charge or create space before a seagull steals your carried catch.

ESC

Controls menu

Recheck keyboard, controller and Steam Input bindings when an interaction stops responding.

INPUT HABITS

When the key feels broken

Unplug a controller, restart the session and confirm Keyboard in the Escape → Controls menu. Steam Input can keep a controller profile active after you return to mouse and keyboard.

  • Check the current session type.
  • Rebind the interaction key if needed.
  • Test on a harmless shoreline catch.

The control loop

Hook or scare a creature out of the water, inspect it, then decide whether to kill it by hand, knife, brass knuckles, pistol, rifle, dynamite or grill. Airborne kills can stack style multipliers such as headshot, no-scope, 360 and one-shot.

Cooking timing

Hold the fish over the grill and watch the value climb. Pull it before it burns; cooked fish is also a healing resource for the later Boss fights. Use F to inspect the item state instead of guessing from the color alone.

Co-op input checklist

Before a four-player run, have every player join the same session type, confirm their controller glyphs and test the revive interaction. Patch 1.0.5 added private lobbies and in-game session type changes, so a public/private mismatch can look like a broken input.
